Market insight Hungary

Being a small and open economy, Hungary has strong relationships with the world market, especially with other European Union countries. Starting from the early 2010s, EU-fund inflows have played a very important role in supporting economic growth. Meanwhile, the economic growth is broadly-based, as both external and internal demand contribute to strong GDP figures in recent years. Fiscal deficit is well below the 3% of GDP Maastricht threshold, while public debt to GDP figures have been on declining path since the beginning of the decade. External indebtedness declined heavily, as well, making the currency less prone to swings in investor sentiment. The country returned to investment grade at all the three credit rating agencies in 2016. Despite the very low global yield environment, government bond yields still offer some pickup compared to German Bunds and some CEE peers, but with strongly improved risk profile after fiscal deficit numbers, public debt and external indebtedness improved considerably since the global financial crisis.
